Pendleton Art Center 22nd Anniversary

Tonight, Final Friday September 27, is the 22nd anniversary of the Pendleton Art Center, in the 100+ year old Krohn-Fecheimer Shoe Company building just north of downtown Cincinnati. This is the fifth year that resident artists have held a Silent Auction in the 8th floor gallery -- it's a great way to collect original work from your favorite artists at bargain prices.

The four images shown here are all matted original acrylic paintings that fit into 11 x 14" ready made frames. Normally these would sell for $200 each but, in celebration of my 7th year in the Pendleton Art Center, opening bid on each one is only $50.

Final Friday is from 6 to 10 pm with $5 valet parking at the door. We're just a few blocks walk from Cincinnati's Horseshoe Casino. I will NOT be at Art in Action tomorrow (Sat) but I do plan to be open for Final Friday Oct 25, Nov 29 and the Holiday Open House on Sat Dec 14.

At the Beach

Last year my artist's residency was in the Finger Lakes area of New York  ... this year it's on the Gulf Coast of Florida. The first day, yesterday, was Sunday, so I took my sabbath and just looked. Also, noted important things like sunrise and sunset times, high and low tides etc.

 

Woke at 6 am but didn't get started setting up until about 7 and the eastern sun was already bright in the sky by then. Good light, so I got some nice photos of the home I'm painting down here and then it took me almost an hour to set up my palette and coat some small 8 x 10 canvases for sunset paintings tonight.

 

A little worried about painting in acrylics today because it's so hot and humid; have my wet palette and spray bottle but I think I'll paint the canvases I coated in oils.

 

The colors I pick for my undercoating inspire me. Today I tried a metallic bronze as well as the marine blue that began the painting above, of a beach house in Maine.

 

At midday, plenty to do with pencil drawings and may try some watercolor today as well.

My Mentor's Latest Construction

At Indiana University's art museum, there was a construction by Joseph Cornell. My teacher, mentor, coach, and friend, Elmer A. Ruff, has created several dozen constructions or assemblages.

This is his most recent work: titled "God Bless the Trash Man Opus 2" His first "God Bless the Trash Man" construction was apparently much smaller. I haven't seen that one, but I LOVED this one.

The photo doesn't really do justice to the real 3-dimensional work. You cannot believe how many unique objects are arranged inside this box!

The work is for sale for $995. It is approximately 24" x 12" x 7."
